Who We Are

Lucia Albino Gilbert, Ph.D., the lead investigator on this project, grew up in a wine- and food-oriented Italian family in New York City. She is a psychologist known for her research on gender equality and feminist psychology, with a specific focus on women's career paths in male-dominated fields such as wine-making and in families with dual careers. Currently Professor Emerita of Psychology at Santa Clara University (SCU) and Professor Emerita of Educational Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin, most recently, she served as SCU's Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Prior to that, she was Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies, Professor of Educational Psychology, and Frank C. Erwin, Jr. Centennial Honors Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. While there, she also directed the University's Center for Women's and Gender Studies. Professor Gilbert has an extensive record of scholarship and is the recipient of awards for teaching, mentorship, and research excellence.

John Carl (Jack) Gilbert, Ph.D., came to love wine through the passion that a valued scientific senior colleague had for Zinfandel and Pinot Noir. Jack is currently Professor Emeritus of Chemistry & Biochemistry at Santa Clara University and at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was an award-winning teacher. At the latter institution, he was also Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Natural Sciences. He chaired the Departments of Chemistry & Biochemistry and of Human Ecology at UT Austin and the Departments of Chemistry & Biochemistry and of Sociology at Santa Clara University. His scientific expertise is in physical organic chemistry, where his research focused on synthetic methodology and the chemical reactions of highly unstable species. Jack taught organic chemistry for some five decades and has been an apiarist for over five.
